A Dawson County Middle School student is dead and many people were hospitalized following a crash involving a school bus with several students aboard in Hall County.
The head-on crash happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning and involved a school bus from Mt. Vernon Elementary School in Gainesville along with one other vehicle. It has forced the closure of SR 60 (Thompson Bridge Road) at Yellow Creek Road in Hall County.
According to the preliminary accident report, a 1995 Ford Mustang was traveling on GA 60 when it hydroplaned, crossing over the center line and hitting the school bus head-on.
Nineteen students were aboard the bus at the time of the crash. All of the students and the bus driver were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center as a precautionary measure.
A student at Dawson County Middle School, later identified as 13 year-old Summer Anderson, was killed and another was injured in the other vehicle.
According to the Dawson County News, the girl's father, 33 year-old Lonnie Anderson of Dawsonville, has been charged with failure to maintain a lane. Anderson was in critical condition at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
No word on what caused the crash.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
